“I’m finally pain-free… but what if it comes back?”
A patient recently asked me this at the end of her last in-person session before heading back to school. She had come to me just four weeks earlier—unable to dance due to sharp hip pain that left her frustrated, anxious, and questioning her future.
Now? She’s dancing again. Stronger. More mobile. And pain-free.
So why was she still so worried?
Because she hadn’t tested her body in a full class yet. And her biggest fear wasn’t the pain itself...it was the fear of being back at square one.
Pain Relief Isn’t the Finish Line—It’s the starting point
This conversation made me realize something a lot of people get wrong about rehab: they treat pain relief as the ultimate goal.
Don’t get me wrong—getting out of pain is huge. But it’s not the final destination.
Pain relief is just the beginning of a deeper journey:
Rebuilding trust in your body
Learning how to listen to early warning signs
Gradually layering back the movements that once felt scary
Because once the pain is gone, that’s when you need a plan the most.
The Role of “Emergency Plans” in Long-Term Recovery of Hip Impingement
Here’s what I told her, and what I tell all my patients who reach this turning point:
Everything you did to get out of pain?That’s your emergency plan if it flares up again.
All those tools—breath work, loading strategies, mobility work, nervous system regulation—they don’t disappear once the pain fades. They become your go-to responses if symptoms try to creep back in.
You're not going backward. You're not broken. You're prepared.
Reintroducing Movement Without Fear
The next phase after pain relief is all about reintroducing movements on your terms.
Not diving back in all at once. Not pushing through pain to “test” if it’s really gone. But instead, learning to really listen to your body.
Some of the best questions to ask during this phase:
What feels slightly off but not painful?
Can I modify this to feel more stable?
Am I hesitating out of fear, or because my body’s truly not ready?
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s smart progression so your body learns to trust itself again.
