Back in the swing of things!

August 25, 2016

I must apologize, it's been a long time since I have updated this blog! It was my summer vacation too :-)

Like it or not, summer is winding down and its time to get back to our routines of work, school  and of course DANCE! I figured what would be more fitting then a few quick tips to remember as you are getting back into the swing of things-- to keep you thinking smart and healthy!

1. Don't stop exercising! As dancers, we tend to only dance. Strength and conditioning is important year round, especially for dancers. Sure, the type and intensity of conditioning might change, but it is essential to keep up with either way. I see the most dance related injuries at the beginning of a new school year as dancers are putting in much longer hours then they have over the summer. A great way to fight against this is to maintain some level of conditioning even after your classes start back up

Don't know what type of exercise  you should be doing?? Contact me or another health care provider to help set you up with the right tools for success!

2. If something starts to hurt- contact a health care provider FIRST. Pain is your bodies way of telling you that something is wrong. Like I said, one of the most common times to sustain a dance injury is at the start of a new season. If you ignore the early warning signs, you may end up getting stuck with a year long injury that does not want to heal itself. Tackling the problem when it begins means a much quicker and easier recovery.

3. Take some time for yourself. Dancers, teachers, parents-- its important for all of you! As the craziness of the new school year begins we all seem to forget what it is like to be stress free. Well guess what? Stress leads to greater chances of injury. Working on keeping your stress level low keeps you healthy both mentally AND physically.

But moving quickly from school to dance to homework to bed- where is there time to breathe?? I think carving a little time out in your week to do something for yourself, even if its just 10 minutes on a Sunday morning, is one of the most important things you can do. Go get your nails done, read a magazine, take a walk or just sit in silence! Find what works for you and you will be amazed what a little zen can do for your life :-)

Remember, On Pointe Wellness and Rehab can help you with all these things. WELLNESS encompasses body, mind and spirit and there is nothing I love more than helping dancers be well.

Have a great school year everyone!!
